Govt to equip remote areas with Internet via satellites in 3–7 yrs

MOSCOW, Aug 13 (PRIME) -- The Russian government will launch satellite constellations to provide remote regions, including the Arctic and the Northern Sea Route, with the Internet in the next three to seven years, Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko said on Friday.

“Our country is the largest in the world, and there are territories with a low density of population where it is either impossible or very expensive to put optical fiber. Groups of satellites will be launched for Internet access for these areas within three to seven years as an initiative,” Chernyshenko said.

He also said that the country’s connection operators that develop 4G networks will have the licenses prolonged to use the frequencies in September.
